What does AIO mean in marketing?

AIO is short for AI Optimization, and marketers use those letters for three different jobs. The first is using artificial intelligence inside your own company to work faster. The second is Google AI Overviews, the AI-written answer that sits above the blue links. The third is getting your brand named inside AI answers, the job the market calls generative engine optimization, or GEO. When a vendor says AIO, ask which of the three they mean before you approve a budget.

Using AI inside your company and being named in AI answers spend your money in different places. Using AI inside your company pays for software and training. Being named in AI answers pays for pages on your website.

Being named in AI answers is the meaning that decides whether buyers find you. Fund that one if people in your market ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Google for a recommendation.

Why do the same three letters mean three things?

The letters collided because software vendors, Google and the AI search platforms each reached for the same two words within about a year of each other. Software companies got there first: Conductor's academy page defines AI Optimization as "leveraging artificial intelligence to enhance performance and efficiency", covering AI models, business processes and strategies such as content discoverability.

Google launched AI Overviews in the United States in May 2024, and rank tracking tools shortened the name to fit a menu, which is why SE Ranking's AI Overviews Tracker sells "advanced AIO tracking and analytics". Semrush came last: it launched Enterprise AIO on 2025-03-06 to "track, control, and optimize brand presence across AI-powered search platforms". Conductor's definition spans both budgets. The Semrush one names only the marketing job.

One abbreviation, three jobs: AI inside your company, Google AI Overviews, being named in AI answers.

What are the three meanings of AIO?

The three meanings of AIO are AI Optimization inside a company, Google AI Overviews, and getting a brand named in AI answers. The table below names each meaning, the kind of company that uses the word that way, the work it actually involves, and who in your business should own it.

What AIO stands for here

Who uses it this way

What the work actually is

Who should own it

AI Optimization, meaning using AI inside your own company

Consultancies and software vendors. Conductor's academy page splits it into AI models, business processes and AI-driven strategy

Automating tasks, training staff, choosing and connecting tools

Operations or IT, as an internal project

AI Overviews, Google's AI answer box, launched in the United States in May 2024

Rank tracking tools. SE Ranking's AI Overviews Tracker sells "advanced AIO tracking and analytics"

Getting one of your pages quoted inside the answer box at the top of Google

Marketing, as one surface inside AI search work

AI Optimization, meaning getting a brand named in AI answers

Platform vendors. Semrush launched Enterprise AIO on 2025-03-06 to "track, control, and optimize brand presence across AI-powered search platforms"

Opening the site to AI bots, writing pages the engines can quote, measuring the answers

Marketing, with whoever owns the website doing the work

Using AI inside your company is an operations project, and it changes nothing about what ChatGPT says about you. The other two meanings are marketing work, and the Google answer box is one surface inside the wider job.

When someone says AIO, ask which one

Ask the vendor which meaning they have in mind, out of AI inside your company, the Google answer box, and being named in AI answers. The reply tells you which budget line the proposal belongs to.

If the answer is the internal meaning, the buyer is operations and the measure is hours saved. If it is the Google box, ask which questions they will track and in which country. If it is being named in AI answers, ask which engines they measure and how often they run the questions.

GEO covers all of AI search in one word, and a plan written that way needs no glossary. If a deck lands on your desk with AIO in it, ask which meaning; you can leave the word itself out of your own plans for now.

Where does AIO sit inside GEO?

GEO is the word we use for all four steps of AI search work, and each meaning of AIO lands on a different one of them. In plain words:

  1. Open the door. The AI companies' bots have to be able to reach and read your site. The GEO explainer lists what blocks them, starting with your robots.txt file.

  2. Give them something worth citing, on your site and on the sites the engines trust. Pages written so an AI can lift a direct answer, with facts, sources, quotes and numbers it can use.

  3. Watch what gets cited. Which of your pages the engines pull in, for which questions, and how often.

  4. Count the recommendations. How many times the engines name your brand, for which buyer questions, in what context, and what that turns into.

Google AI Overviews belong to the opening and the citable pages, because a page has to be readable and quotable before Google can quote it. Being named in AI answers runs across every step. Using AI inside your own company falls outside all four.

What are Google AI Overviews?

Google AI Overviews are one of the three things people mean by AIO, and they are the AI-written answer at the top of a Google results page. Picture a shop assistant who has read every leaflet in the shop and answers your question in one breath. The AI Overview does that job at the top of Google, and the blue links wait behind it. Google builds each answer from pages it has already indexed, and it links a few of those pages beside the text.

AI Overviews change how people behave on the page. Pew Research Center watched the Google searches of 900 United States adults in March 2025. Users clicked a normal search result in 8% of the visits where an AI summary appeared, and in 15% of the visits where none appeared. They clicked a link inside the summary itself in 1% of visits.

Pew counted searches made by real people, and about 18% of those searches showed an AI summary. Semrush counts a different base, the share of tracked United States keywords that return an AI Overview, which reached 24.61% in July 2025.

Google AI Overview coverage of tracked US keywords in 2025, peaking at 24.61% in July.

Google widened AI Overviews through the first half of 2025 and then pulled back. Check your own buyer questions, in the country you sell in, before you plan around any published average.

How does a page end up inside an AI Overview?

A page ends up inside a Google AI Overview when Google has indexed it and can quote a passage from it that answers the question. Google's documentation for site owners, updated 2026-07-10, says: "To be eligible to be shown in generative AI features on Google Search, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet."

The same page closes two common shortcuts. "Structured data isn't required for generative AI search, and there's no special schema.org markup you need to add." And: "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, markup, or Markdown to appear in Google Search."

Google also says its AI features are built on its core Search ranking systems, so pages that already do well in Google start ahead of everyone else. The work that moves you is opening the door and giving the engines something worth citing. Let the bots in, then answer the question in one clear paragraph near the top of the page, with figures and sources an engine can lift.

Winning Google's box does not carry into ChatGPT. A February 2025 Seer Interactive study of about 500 citations across about 100 queries found that 87% of ChatGPT search citations matched Bing's top results, against 56% for Google.

A worked illustration: what an AI Overview quotes

A Google AI Overview quotes the pages that answer the exact question early and plainly. A buyer types "how much does warehouse software cost for a small distributor" into Google, and an answer to that question usually leans on three kinds of page.

One is a vendor pricing page that states the monthly price and what changes it, in one paragraph above the fold. Another is a comparison article that names the products and gives the price of each. The last is an industry forum thread where users post what they actually pay.

Illustration drawn to show the pattern rather than copied from a live search: a Google AI Overview answering a warehouse software pricing question with three sources.

How is AIO measured?

Share of answers is the number to lead with: out of the buyer questions you track, the percentage where an engine names your brand. Tracking tools call this same number visibility. Agenzy's 2026 study of 187,810 AI answers found the median European SMB brand appears in just 5% of AI answers about its own product category (across 90 tracked market projects, from April to August 2026). SMB there means small and mid-sized businesses, which covers most companies reading this page. Read the full study for the method behind that number.

Citations come next: which of your pages the engines quote, and how often. Read that number against your own trend over four weeks, and against the other brands answering the same questions.

Google has its own instrument. Search Console's Generative AI performance report has been available worldwide since 2026-08-31, and it shows how many times your links appeared inside AI Overviews and AI Mode. It counts impressions, so it tells you how often you appeared and leaves clicks inside the ordinary Search figures.

When is AIO not worth the money?

AIO is not worth the money when what you actually wanted was the internal meaning of the word. If the problem you came to solve is your own team's speed, the budget belongs with operations, it buys software and training, and it will not change a single AI answer about your company. That mix-up is specific to these three letters, and it is worth catching before a marketing agency is briefed on it.

The reasons to wait that apply to the marketing meaning are the ones that stop any AI search work: a category whose buyers never ask an assistant, a site the bots cannot read, and a budget too short to see a trend. The GEO explainer sets out all three.

Where do I start?

Start by finding out what the engines say about your category today. That first pass costs an afternoon of someone's time. Write down the ten questions your buyers actually ask, in their words, and run them through ChatGPT, Gemini and Google, recording who gets named and whether an AI Overview appears at all in the country you sell in. Ten questions by hand is the manual first look; a tracked set that produces a trend starts at fifty.

Opening the site to the AI bots comes before that if anything is blocking them, and the pages you rewrite afterwards are the work itself. The GEO explainer has the full order, and the method we work to is on our GEO service page.

Questions people ask about AIO

Is AIO the same as GEO?

AIO and GEO mean the same job when AIO is used in its marketing sense: getting your brand named and your pages quoted inside AI answers. GEO is the name on our own pages, because GEO carries one meaning while AIO carries three. AI SEO is another of the names people use for this work, and what you do behind each name is the same.

What is the difference between AIO and AEO?

AEO stands for answer engine optimization: writing pages so an AI can lift a direct answer from them, on every answer engine including Google AI Overviews. AIO, in its marketing sense, covers the same ground, and the word is most often attached to the Google surface. AEO maps onto the step called giving the engines something worth citing; our AEO explainer shows how the answer passage gets chosen.

Can I opt out of Google AI Overviews?

Google offers no switch that removes you from AI Overviews while keeping your normal listing. Google's documentation says a page must be eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet to be eligible for AI features, so blocking snippets removes you from both at once. Most businesses lose more from the missing listing than from the AI Overview.

Does AIO mean AI Optimization at Semrush?

Semrush uses AIO for AI Optimization, and its Enterprise AIO product launched on 2025-03-06 to "track, control, and optimize brand presence across AI-powered search platforms". That is the marketing meaning of the word, covering ChatGPT, Perplexity and other assistants as well as Google. Conductor uses the same two words for a wider idea that includes internal AI projects.

How do I check whether my website appears in AI Overviews?

Type your buyers' questions into Google yourself, in the country you sell in, and note whether an AI Overview appears and who it quotes. For a trend rather than one reading, Search Console's Generative AI performance report shows AI Overview impressions, and daily tracking tools run the same questions every day. Prompt tracking explains how that measurement works.
